MrsClay’saffectionshadoverpoweredherinterest,andshehadsacrificed,fortheyoungman’ssake,thepossibilityofscheminglongerforSirWalter.Shehasabilities,however,aswellasaffectionsanditisnowadoubtfulpointwhetherhiscunning,orhers,mayfinallycarrythedaywhether,afterpreventingherfrombeingthewifeofSirWalter,hemaynotbewheedledandcaressedatlastintomakingherthewifeofSirWilliam. ItcannotbedoubtedthatSirWalterandElizabethwereshockedandmortifiedbythelossoftheircompanion,andthediscoveryoftheirdeceptioninher.Theyhadtheirgreatcousins,tobesure,toresorttoforcomfortbuttheymustlongfeelthattoflatterandfollowothers,withoutbeingflatteredandfollowedinturn,isbutastateofhalfenjoyment. Anne,satisfiedataveryearlyperiodofLadyRussell’smeaningtoloveCaptainWentworthassheought,hadnootheralloytothehappinessofherprospectsthanwhatarosefromtheconsciousnessofhavingnorelationstobestowonhimwhichamanofsensecouldvalue.Thereshefeltherowninferiorityverykeenly.Thedisproportionintheirfortunewasnothingitdidnotgiveheramoment’sregretbuttohavenofamilytoreceiveandestimatehimproperly,nothingofrespectability,ofharmony,ofgoodwilltoofferinreturn
