Oneyoungmanofmyacquaintance,whohasinheritedsomeacres,toldmethathethoughtheshouldliveasIdid,ifhehadthemeans.Iwouldnothaveanyoneadoptmymodeoflivingonanyaccountfor,besidethatbeforehehasfairlylearneditImayhavefoundoutanotherformyself,IdesirethattheremaybeasmanydifferentpersonsintheworldaspossiblebutIwouldhaveeachonebeverycarefultofindoutandpursuehisownway,andnothisfather’sorhismother’sorhisneighbor’sinstead.Theyouthmaybuildorplantorsail,onlylethimnotbehinderedfromdoingthatwhichhetellsmehewouldliketodo.Itisbyamathematicalpointonlythatwearewise,asthesailororthefugitiveslavekeepsthepolestarinhiseyebutthatissufficientguidanceforallourlife.Wemaynotarriveatourportwithinacalculableperiod,butwewouldpreservethetruecourse.
