AllthatIcouldsay,then,withrespecttofarmingonalargescale,(Ihavealwayscultivatedagarden,)was,thatIhadhadmyseedsready.Manythinkthatseedsimprovewithage.IhavenodoubtthattimediscriminatesbetweenthegoodandthebadandwhenatlastIshallplant,Ishallbelesslikelytobedisappointed.ButIwouldsaytomyfellows,onceforall,Aslongaspossiblelivefreeanduncommitted.Itmakesbutlittledifferencewhetheryouarecommittedtoafarmorthecountyjail. OldCato,whose“DeReRustica”ismy“Cultivator,”says,andtheonlytranslationIhaveseenmakessheernonsenseofthepassage,“Whenyouthinkofgettingafarm,turnitthusinyourmind,nottobuygreedilynorspareyourpainstolookatit,anddonotthinkitenoughtogorounditonce.Theofteneryougotherethemoreitwillpleaseyou,ifitisgood.”IthinkIshallnotbuygreedily,butgoroundandrounditaslongasIlive,andbeburiedinitfirst,thatitmaypleasemethemoreatlast. Thepresentwasmynextexperimentofthiskind,whichIpurposetodescribemoreatlengthforconvenience,puttingtheexperienceoftwoyearsintoone.AsIhavesaid,Idonotproposetowriteanodetodejection,buttobragaslustilyaschanticleerinthemorning,standingonhisroost,ifonlytowakemyneighborsup.
