    ThetimenowapproachedforLadyRussell’sreturn:thedaywasevenfixedandAnne,beingengagedtojoinherassoonasshewasresettled,waslookingforwardtoanearlyremovaltoKellynch,andbeginningtothinkhowherowncomfortwaslikelytobeaffectedbyit. ItwouldplaceherinthesamevillagewithCaptainWentworth,withinhalfamileofhimtheywouldhavetofrequentthesamechurch,andtheremustbeintercoursebetweenthetwofamilies.Thiswasagainstherbutontheotherhand,hespentsomuchofhistimeatUppercross,thatinremovingthenceshemightbeconsideredratherasleavinghimbehind,thanasgoingtowardshimand,uponthewhole,shebelievedshemust,onthisinterestingquestion,bethegainer,almostascertainlyasinherchangeofdomesticsociety,inleavingpoorMaryforLadyRussell. ShewisheditmightbepossibleforhertoavoideverseeingCaptainWentworthattheHall:thoseroomshadwitnessedformermeetingswhichwouldbebroughttoopainfullybeforeherbutshewasyetmoreanxiousforthepossibilityofLadyRussellandCaptainWentworthnevermeetinganywhere.Theydidnotlikeeachother,andnorenewalofacquaintancenowcoulddoanygoodandwereLadyRusselltoseethemtogether,shemightthinkthathehadtoomuchself-possession,andshetoolittle. ThesepointsformedherchiefsolicitudeinanticipatingherremovalfromUppercross,whereshefeltshehadbeenstationedquitelongenough.HerusefulnesstolittleCharleswouldalwaysgivesomesweetnesstothememoryofhertwomonths’visitthere,buthewasgainingstrengthapace,andshehadnothingelsetostayfor. Theconclusionofhervisit,however,wasdiversifiedinawaywhichshehadnotatallimagined.CaptainWentworth,afterbeingunseenandunheardofatUppercrossfortwowholedays,appearedagainamongthemtojustifyhimselfbyarelationofwhathadkepthimaway.
