ThesecondclasswereBritishEnglish.OftheseIdidnotencounterhalfadozenduringthewholetimeofmyattendanceattheseminarytheircharacteristicswerecleanbutcarelessdress,ill-arrangedhair(comparedwiththetightandtrimforeigners),erectcarriage,flexiblefigures,whiteandtaperhands,featuresmoreirregular,butalsomoreintellectualthanthoseoftheBelgians,graveandmodestcountenances,ageneralairofnativeproprietyanddecencybythislastcircumstancealoneIcouldataglancedistinguishthedaughterofAlbionandnurslingofProtestantismfromthefoster-childofRome,thePROTEGEEofJesuistry:proud,too,wastheaspectoftheseBritishgirlsatonceenviedandridiculedbytheircontinentalassociates,theywardedoffinsultwithausterecivility,andmethatewithmutedisdaintheyeschewedcompany-keeping,andinthemidstofnumbersseemedtodwellisolated.
