Therewassomesympatheticlaughteronhisentranceamongthefrontbenchesofwell-dressedspectators,asthoughthedemonstrationofthestudentsinthisinstancewasnotunwelcometothem.Thatgreetingwas,indeed,afrightfuloutburstofsound,theuproarofthecarnivoracagewhenthestepofthebucket-bearingkeeperisheardinthedistance.Therewasanoffensivetoneinit,perhaps,andyetinthemainitstruckmeasmereriotousoutcry,thenoisyreceptionofonewhoamusedandinterestedthem,ratherthanofonetheydislikedordespised.Challengersmiledwithwearyandtolerantcontempt,asakindlymanwouldmeettheyappingofalitterofpuppies.Hesatslowlydown,blewouthischest,passedhishandcaressinglydownhisbeard,andlookedwithdroopingeyelidsandsuperciliouseyesatthecrowdedhallbeforehim.TheuproarofhisadventhadnotyetdiedawaywhenProfessorRonaldMurray,thechairman,andMr.Waldron,thelecturer,threadedtheirwaytothefront,andtheproceedingsbegan.
