    OnglancingovermynotesoftheseventyoddcasesinwhichIhaveduringthelasteightyearsstudiedthemethodsofmyfriendSherlockHolmes,Ifindmanytragic,somecomic,alargenumbermerelystrange,butnonecommonplacefor,workingashedidratherfortheloveofhisartthanfortheacquirementofwealth,herefusedtoassociatehimselfwithanyinvestigationwhichdidnottendtowardstheunusual,andeventhefantastic.Ofallthesevariedcases,however,Icannotrecallanywhichpresentedmoresingularfeaturesthanthatwhichwasassociatedwiththewell-knownSurreyfamilyoftheRoylottsofStokeMoran.TheeventsinquestionoccurredintheearlydaysofmyassociationwithHolmes,whenweweresharingroomsasbachelorsinBakerStreet.ItispossiblethatImighthaveplacedthemuponrecordbefore,butapromiseofsecrecywasmadeatthetime,fromwhichIhaveonlybeenfreedduringthelastmonthbytheuntimelydeathoftheladytowhomthepledgewasgiven.Itisperhapsaswellthatthefactsshouldnowcometolight,forIhavereasonstoknowthattherearewidespreadrumoursastothedeathofDr.GrimesbyRoylottwhichtendtomakethematterevenmoreterriblethanthetruth.
