SherlockHolmeswasamanwhoseldomtookexerciseforexercise’ssake.Fewmenwerecapableofgreatermusculareffort,andhewasundoubtedlyoneofthefinestboxersofhisweightthatIhaveeverseenbuthelookeduponaimlessbodilyexertionasawasteofenergy,andheseldombestirredhimselfsavewhentherewassomeprofessionalobjecttobeserved.Thenhewasabsolutelyuntiringandindefatigable.Thatheshouldhavekepthimselfintrainingundersuchcircumstancesisremarkable,buthisdietwasusuallyofthesparest,andhishabitsweresimpletothevergeofausterity.Savefortheoccasionaluseofcocaine,hehadnovices,andheonlyturnedtothedrugasaprotestagainstthemonotonyofexistencewhencaseswerescantyandthepapersuninteresting.
