    ShortlyaftermymarriageIhadboughtaconnectioninthePaddingtondistrict.OldMr.Farquhar,fromwhomIpurchasedit,hadatonetimeanexcellentgeneralpracticebuthisage,andanafflictionofthenatureofSt.Vitus’sdancefromwhichhesuffered,hadverymuchthinnedit.Thepublicnotunnaturallygoesontheprinciplethathewhowouldhealothersmusthimselfbewhole,andlooksaskanceatthecurativepowersofthemanwhoseowncaseisbeyondthereachofhisdrugs.Thusasmypredecessorweakenedhispracticedeclined,untilwhenIpurchaseditfromhimithadsunkfromtwelvehundredtolittlemorethanthreehundredayear.Ihadconfidence,however,inmyownyouthandenergy,andwasconvincedthatinaveryfewyearstheconcernwouldbeasflourishingasever.
